Alan Gilliland – Designer

Illustrator/designer. 72 Penguin non-fiction books’ graphics; 3 book series Osprey Ex-graphics ed., Daily Telegraph, 20+awards. Cover illus.

Overview

I am a freelance illustrator and designer who has worked with publishers of all sizes, incl. 72 books for Penguin; three book series for Osprey military; designing building templates etc. for an 00-gauge model railway village for Hachette Partworks and 90 issues of a Great Battles series for a Russian publisher through Windmill Books (packagers); and graphics for the current National Gallery Guide book through Ivy Press. A former graphics editor of the Daily Telegraph with 22-odd national/international awards, my work covers a very wide range of subjects from war to archaeology, natural history to science. I illustrate book covers and children’s books, including my own nonsense adventure, a Book of the Year for Lovereading4kids website, that has sold around 32,000 copies world wide to date, over 9,000 in hardback in the UK at £15 and around 22,000 in China and also in South Korea. I performed all aspects of the publishing operation through to organizing printing in China and marketing for both that book and my first adult Gothic novel, which sold 3,000 at £10 in the UK as a trade paperback. I also illustrate for architects and developers of futures systems, architectural and agricultural.
I am always up for new and creative challenges.

Over the years I have occupied myself in a variety of fields:
- film-making at college (Don Quixote award at Cracow Short Film Festival - co-directed and -edited);
- architectural college (Architectural Association School, London) and draughtsman (to finance course);
- photo-journalist (Evenening Despatch, Darlington) & topical newspaper cartoonist(Northern Echo, Darlington);
- information graphic artist (Northern Echo; London Daily News; 18yrs and 22 national/international awards as graphics editor of The Daily Telegraph – every subject from science and sport to natural history, archaeology to war and disaster);
- freelance illustrator for publishers: see intro..
- illustrator for architects incl. John McAslan & Partners (biomass energy centre cutaway for London Olympics and Abu Dhabi National museum exhibit); Kit Martin (now Prince Charles Regeneration Trust historic buildings adviser); Norwich Theatre Royal regeneration.
- publisher of my own books, illustrated children’s and adult fiction (see below).

Media. Digital: Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Painter. Hand: pencil, crayon, pen and ink, watercolour, gouache.

I have self-published (traditionally) two books so far (performing all publishing and marketing operations except editing).

The Amazing Adventures of Curd the Lion (and Us!) in the Land at the Back of Beyond. Children’s nonsense adventure, 7-12 yrs. Hardback. 176 pages. 80 pencil illustrations & map. £15.
32,000 plus SOLD WORLDWIDE.
9,000 sold in the UK, 1,360 in S. Korea, the rest (ongoing) in China.

Lovereading4kids made it a Book of Year and keep it on essential reads list - many reviews there, including Margaret Mallett, an award-winning educationist (UK Literacy Society), who gave a half page review in her book on children’s literature for teachers.

The Flight of Birds. Gothic ghost tale/horror thriller under Alan Howard (adult fiction name). 400 pages trade p/b. £10. Sold 3,000 UK. (Now in two editions, Black and White, with different beginnings and endings to same story)

Work experience

X

Jan, 2008 — Present

My work is two-pronged. On the one hand I illustrate for many publishers in non-fiction subjects including science, anthropology, archaeology, history (ancient and modern), travel, nature, war (from weapons cutaways to campaign and aerial views of battle maps). I designed buildings and figures in 3 dimensions for model-builders of a 1950’s English village for Hachette’s railway part-works. I illustrate cutaways and exploded diagrams for architects and developers.
On the other hand, I write, illustrate, design and publish traditionally under my own imprint my own work with some degree of success, if you take sales value figures, rather than quantity, as a yardstick, having sold over £165,000-worth of these to date, not including translation rights.

Alan was a joy to work with. He was prompt, professional, and delivered an illustration beyond my expectations. He met the deadline with time to spare. He was courteous and genuinely interested in the map features I needed, even suggesting an improvement which I agreed to. I wouldn't hesitate to work with him again.

Alan created a drawing for one of my projects. He worked with me across several revisions to make sure that everything was just right. He is very talented and completed the work days before the due date. I look forward to working with him again.

Alan did a great job on a map for my book. We did have communication issues, but I think that was probably Reedsy's fault more than anything for not forwarding messages properly.
Alan G.
I agree. I did not receive an email alert for a response Earik made. Though that made no difference to the outcome as I saw that when he he sent an additional response.

Alan was very easy to work with and extremely responsive throughout the project. He took the time to make several edits and options for my cover to let me chose which I preferred and then also formatted the back page, again, giving me some different color options. I plan to self-publish on Amazon, via Creatspace and he was able to give me everything I need in the formats I need them. I had a g...
