The Dirt Bike Detective #2: The Beast in the Shadows

By

Loved it! 😍

Lots of action; Keeps you absorbed. And it all seems so real! Have a Read. You will love it!

Doug Hoover, the author, looks like a fun person from his bio. In fact while “saving the world from reality”, he comes up with this delightful imaginative story of strange events, ghosts and a Team of Kid Detectives. What is noticeable about his writing, is his use of intelligent language rather than lapsing into the slang of today.

“The Dirt Bike Detective #2; The Beast in the Shadows”, features Oliver, who carries us through the story. Hoover has an interesting writing style with an awesome attention to detail. The prologue…I really liked this. It kept me riveted from the get go. In fact I had a 12 year old sitting beside me, so I asked her to read it. She was fixed from beginning to end. Lots of smiles all around.

The prologue sets the tone for the story as the reader has to decide if it really happened or were these events just made up.

“On Chase’s wall, one shadow grew large—into that of a man. The shadow came to life, peeling itself off the flat surface and becoming three-dimensional.

The shadow spoke. “I want to help you—to keep you safe.”

A shadow lurking in my room that came to life wants to keep me safe? Not a chance!!

Oliver himself has to make that decision early on and calls for the help of his trusty friends led by Chase. They were a Detective Team after all.

In making all the characters uniquely different, I think Hoover makes the reader take a hard look at themselves and their own personal prejudices. “The Dirt Bike Detective #2”, is a great read especially for children as the story lives in the ‘other’ world but is filled with natural everyday happenings. So with a dollop of imagination, it’s easy to relate to what is happening in the story.

As Jax puts it “Did we just move from missing pizza to werewolves?”

Hoover’s background, lifestyle, interests, training all come to life as the people and places stretch the imagination. As I mentioned, the language and the concepts used should help the middle school readers to grow and want to expand the vocabulary. This is not just one story. It is a series of stories as the plot unfolds. Lots of magical events with ghosts and unexplainable events. Not a moment of boredom and I won’t tell you the unexpected ending as the unstopable Team of Detectives solve incident after incident.

I can see this as an entertaining, colourful kids movie!!
