The Gemstone Peridot: A Spy Thriller

Must read 🏆

Murder. Spies. Assassins. Follow the tale of mitigation specialist Liv as she tries to get a young man off of death row and finds trouble.

The Gemstone Peridot by Jon Hebert follows Liv Baird, a mitigation specialist from New Orleans, as she answers the pleas for help from the mother of a young man on death row. The more she learns, the deeper she gets pulled into a huge conspiracy that seems to involve homegrown terrorists, Russian spies and assassins, CIA Special Ops Forces, and more. Will Liv be able to find evidence of Ned's innocence, or will one of the many dangerous people looking for her kill her first?

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. It was one of the most thrilling mystery books I have read in a while, and Jon Hebert does an excellent job of weaving the story together from a multitude of perspectives. Each character is very well formed and the book kept my attention the entire time. Readers saw the story unfold through the eyes of Cole, an underground CIA operative; Wyatt, a corrupt and violent police officer; Sarah, a supposedly grieving widow; Erin, the mother of the young man on death row; Liv, and more. I found it humorous how the author seemed to be writing from a dystopian "what if" perspective, with America recovering from the reign of a borderline autocratic president who stirred up white nationalist violence and who acted with the backing of a ruthlessly vicious Russian president.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a really well-written spy thriller. Only pick it up if you have plenty of time though -- once I started reading this book I did not want to put it down! I would offer a trigger warning to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, however, as these topics are covered fairly frequently throughout the book with little to no warning of their discussion. Other than that, I believe that this book would be a great read for any mature audiences who want a fun and thrilling mystery.

I have been an avid reader all my life. I mostly love horror, thrillers, and classics, but I am happy to read almost every genere. Looking forward to writing my own book one day, but in the meantime have really been enjoying reviewing other people's masterpieces.
