The Secret Angels

By

Loved it! 😍

Bhattacharya's The Secret Angels is an intriguing mystery with multiple layers of depth that will leave readers guessing until the very end.

Do you read fables or mythological folklore? If so, you learn that nothing is ever as it seems. For instance, looks can be deceiving, like Zeus coming down in the form of golden rain to impregnate Danae. Or beauty can be a diversion, like the tale of the sirens: beautiful women who would lure men to their deaths by hypnotizing them with their enchanting song. These are the tricks of gods and goddesses, that are as old as time itself. Bhattacharya captivates readers by luring them in with a simple tale about a goddess and a snake. If you've gotten that far, then you're a goner.

Darya has an inkling that mysteries follow her around no matter where she travels and she's totally right. In Mumbai for a two-month stay, she checks into a villa off of Chapel Road in Bandra with a long-time friend, Veda, and the weird vibes couldn't be more off the charts after meeting the villa owners, Viktor and Debbie. Darya is taking barista classes in preparation for the coffee shop she wants to open with her boyfriend Aaron, and Veda... is still searching for the next best thing. From listening to the stories surrounding Chapel Road, Darya realizes that she has once again found herself in the middle of a dangerous situation. Not only are Viktor and Debbie super strange, but the whole lane is riddled with stories of missing girls, and the sister of one of them lives next door. Veda and Darya get to know Jasmine over the short period of time, inquiring about her missing sister, and Darya is introduced to an odd tale that seems to have a lot to do with the disappearances. When the other female tenants start disappearing, Darya starts to question whether her choice to stay, even after hearing the stories, was the best decision. Snooping seems to have been the worst decision of all, especially after Veda winds up missing and she starts to feel like she is being watched. With only one lead to follow, from an unsuspecting person at that, Darya must determine how she can survive once she discovers that this missing girls story is much bigger than she could have ever imagined.

Bhattacharya's The Secret Angels is an intriguing mystery with multiple layers of depth that will leave readers guessing until the very end. With everyone having something to hide, Darya and Veda are perfect targets, but they are also strong. The author has developed them quiet well, allowing the reader to stay engaged as more puzzle pieces continue to drop. While Viktor, Darya, and Veda are fairly predictable characters, Debbie throws a wrench into the mix. The pace remains steady throughout the story, the content is well-written, and there are very few grammatical and spelling errors. Overall, the story is worth the read and is recommended for readers who enjoy occult fiction and supernatural mystery. This is the second installment in the Darya Nandkarni's Misadventures, but it can be read as a standalone since the mysteries appear not to be related.
