We started off this year\u2019s program with a fantastic workshop all about education equality in Austria led by Magdalena Strauch from Teach For Austria! First, we dove into the stats of education inequality in Austria, learning about the cycle of low education achievement in families and the challenges in breaking the cycle that many families living in Austria are faced with. Magdalena explained the role Teach For Austria plays in bringing about a change (nearly 10,000 students worth of change!) and how Teach For Austria is addressing the global goal of \u201c[Ensuring] inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all\u201d \u2013 or Sustainable Development Goal 4. She, then, had the students put their thinking caps on to assess how one addresses such an immense goal here in Austria, or even in Vienna (I say the students, but really the whole team was in on the brainstorming session). We broke off into small groups, chose a target of SDG 4, and she led us step-by-step through the analysis: identifying barriers to reaching the target, considering various stakeholders involved, prioritizing problems and actions, and finally, what WE could do NOW about it. Plot twist! How inspiring it was to hear these young adults\u2019 ideas on how to create impact among their peers!
