Jane Haxby

Jane Haxby – Editor

Kind, dedicated, collaborative editor with extensive experience in academic nonfiction.

Overview

I've been an editor for over a decade now, and have worked with trade presses (Macmillan), small presses (Dalkey Archive Publishing, Black Sparrow Books), and university presses (Oxford UP, UVA Press, NYU Press). Authors I've worked with include documentary historians, professors of economics and business, and religious studies scholars, as well as writers of literary fiction and creative nonfiction. With a BA in religious studies from Yale and an MA in English from the University of Virginia, and over twenty years of experience in universities (including five years as a biology lab technician at the University of Pennsylvania!), I'm well-versed in the challenges and joys of academic writing. Most of my work has been copyediting; I have also indexed five books and developmentally edited one. Along with academic writing, I've copyedited or proofread almost forty trade books in genres including popular nonfiction, memoir, and fiction.

Editing is a collaboration, and I see every project as an opportunity to help and to learn. I approach each book with curiosity and kindness, eager to find and amplify its best qualities while smoothing out any oversights or inconsistencies. It is my great privilege and joy to help you, the author and expert, to communicate your ideas, in your own unique voice, to readers. I take pride in my attention to detail and ability to meet tight deadlines and juggle disparate tasks. I love books and am delighted to help them be the best they can be!
