Nicole Lischewski – Translator

Professional translator with a passion for storytelling and over 20 books in a variety of genres. I love atmospheric writing and word play.

Overview

I'm a German-Canadian translator and have been freelancing for publishing houses like Droemer Knaur, Luzifer Verlag and Sorriso Verlag since 2013. Among the 20-odd books I've translated for publishers so far are thrillers, crime, mystery and dystopian novels, a memoir, as well as a coming of age novel.
I am the German translator of bestselling and award-winning author Robert McCammon's historical mystery series about Matthew Corbett.

I love bringing across word play and carrying the author's voice into German so readers can experience the atmosphere of your book much like the original. It's really important to me that the German text sounds natural and not odd the way poor translations do. I know how much you have slaved over each and every sentence, and will make sure I get all these subtleties right in my translation.

I do all the necessary research: Finding the correct scientific terms for a sci-fi thriller or double-checking the use of German expressions in the 1700s for historical fiction are a part of my job I particularly enjoy, having always been a nerd for language and weird facts. I edit and proofread every translation twice, cutting down the time for further editing.

My path into translating originated in writing, so I very much understand where you're coming from as an author. I was a newspaper columnist and travel magazine writer until I decided to try my hand at writing a book, a memoir about living in a fly-in location in Canada's wilderness.

This opened up the fascinating world of fellow authors, beta readers and the nerve-wracking quest for an agent. I was lucky to find an agent and have since published not only that memoir, but also a thriller and a historical novel, each with a different German publisher.

Since I live in Canada and read a lot of English books, it brings me special joy to translate into my mother tongue German and make English-speaking authors and their creative worlds accessible to German readers.

Apart from my love of language and books, I'm passionate about wildlife, nature, hiking and kayaking. I really like hands-on work like stained glass, sewing and carpentry, and have built my own cabin.

I figure life is very much about reaching our potential and making our dreams come true - I'll gladly help you with achieving your dream to have your book published in German.

And if you're also looking for a German proofreader or editor, I can arrange to have the translation professionally edited for you.

I look forward to chatting with you and hearing all about your book!

Nicole is an absolute joy to work with. She came to my project so enthusiastic and dedicated. I loved how committed she was to not only completing an accurate translation, but one that would reflect the tone of the story, its genre, and my own narrative style. Her communication and punctuality was brilliant, and I loved brainstorming with her different translations for what are essentially my o...
